Yet again Max Beerbohm Books

I enjoyed these essays. Beerbohm could be rather distant, emotionally, from his subjects. I don't think Beerbohm strongly believed in anything. And yet, at his best, he's a masterful essayist. I prefer the wit of Chesterton and the manliness of Belloc, but Beerbohm is very much worth reading.

Yet again Max Beerbohm Books Reviews

I truly find it irksome when Max Beerbohm is described as a "minor" great writer based solely on his productivity. We may use the same measuring stick about J.D. Salinger (minor if ever there ever was one) conversely calling Phillip Roth, Maria Corelli or Steven King "great" based upon dead trees that were felled for their truly "minor" writing.

Perhaps it was the fact that Mr. Beerbohm was such a great cartoonist that his literary endeavors were overshadowed or there is a conceit among reviewers that by judging him somehow lacking they cover themselves with the patina of a connoisseur I can only speculate. Let there be no mistake that when Mr. Beerbohm wishes, he handles a pen with all the virtuosity of an orchestra conductor with his baton.

However stunning it is to read the phrase "Fuit the frantic factitious sentimentalism" in the chapter "A Club In Ruins" embracing his classical training and an ear for alliteration the latter which has swamped our present day advertising worldesque writing style.

When the contemporary world is too much with us, too crude, too cheap, too vulgar, it is refreshing to be able to sit and read the essays of a man whose wit and elegance still has the power to talk to us today. While Max Beerbohm has the reputation of being a pacific personality (with the exception of the poor Jerome K. Jerome) you will see in this collection a fierce defense of standards he holds dear. One can do no better than "Porro Unum" or "Ichabod" to realize how contemporary he is.
