Hitler Christianity (Audible Audio Edition) J P Holding Philip D Moore Tekton Apologetics Books Reviews

My ministry partner, J.P. Holding, sent me this book he wrote for my own review of it. While he has long held that Hitler wasn't a Christian (And for that matter, wasn't an atheist either), this book marked some in-depth research done on the topic of Christianity, since while Hitler wasn't a Christian, he did make claims to be one.

As it turns out, the Nazi movement instead had a teaching called Positive Christianity. This would be a cult of Christianity that went so much against the Jewishness that existed in the Bible that even Marcion would not recognize the Bible.

Deeply revealing in the book is the idea of the way the German church was at the time of the rise of Hitler. Critical scholarship had been undermining the text, there was not a major emphasis on doctrine and most churches were not well-informed on doctrine, and charismatic speakers could easily win the day.

Also, there was the strong emphasis on nationalism as the German people saw themselves in a unique position. I find this a timely warning since I myself am a strong conservative who holds to conservative political viewpoints as well and who does love my country, but we should not equate conservatism in politics with orthodoxy in Christianity. I know several Christians who are political liberals. I disagree with them on that issue, but I do not deny that they are true Christians.

Holding in the book takes a deep look at what Positive Christianity believed and also at some of the most important figures in the Nazi movement. He also warns against sources that are not reliable that often try to paint out Hitler to be an occultist. While there were people in the Nazi party who had an interest in the occult, Hitler was not one of them.

Also, Holding covers issues that could be raised in objection such as the idea that the Nazis had emblems that said "God with us." He also answers the question about why it is that the Catholic Church never excommunicated Hitler.

Furthermore, there's a section in there on the NT and asking if it is anti-semitical. Holding takes the works of leading scholars on the passages most often used by those who want to say the NT is an anti-semitical document and shows that these positions do not stand up to scrutiny.

It's important for us to take a look at Hitler in his time and context in history and not read our ideas into what he said. Also, we must realize that as a politician as well, Hitler could say things that were politically advantageous without having them really be accurate.

If there was one area I would like to have seen addressed, it would have been the charge that much of what Hitler got came from Martin Luther supposedly. That is the only aspect that I did not see covered that I would have liked to have seen something on. On the other hand, many atheists should be surprised and hopefully pleased to realize that Holding does not base the holocaust on evolutionary theory as well, as I think there's only one section where it really says anything about Darwinism.

In conclusion, I recommend this book. It will be necessary reading for any who engage atheists on the topic of if Hitler was a Christian or not.

I have always believed that Adolf Hitler was probably an atheist, but also a politician who was good at saying what people wanted to hear.

This volume by apologist J.P. Holding, has made me seriously rethink my view of Hitler's religious views. Also before reading this book I was completely unfamiliar with Positive Christianity.

I recommend this book to anybody who has faced the argument that Adolf Hitler and other Nazis were "True" Christians and to those interested in history
Hitler is one of those infamous figures where you will always hear rumors and stories about who he was and what he believed. I personally have heard the following from various sources that he was gay, part-Jewish, a catholic priest, christian, atheist, occultist, the anti-christ, obsessed with the "spear of destiny", the literal devil, and....well, you see what I mean. All of these variances for just one person. Can you imagine that? Of course, when we think of something evil or want to insult a particular group we always try to compare any said group with the worst example possible. The best approach nowadays is to simple say "Well, Hitler was a -insert group you want to insult here-" Let's be honest, what do we really know without researching who or what the man really was. It always amazes me that people would rather take a word of an internet meme than to actually ask and research "what was Hitler actually like."

Before I looked into J.P. holdings materials I was never aware of the term "Positive Christianity" before. Probably because most people on the internet don't bothers to look further than a speech or statement from an isolated incident in Hitler's life. What he found is pretty interesting. Holding doesn't seem too eager to compare him with any group specifically, but he agrees that he was not an atheist, or an occultist. I could see some atheists dancing at the sight of this information thinking they have an upper-hand in internet debates. However, while the words "Hitler was a Christian" is in the book, it's nothing an atheist could use in a debate or any kind of argument really. Hitler sort of developed his own kind of Christianity, Positive Christianity had it's own version of Jesus, the bible (need to purify it from all the jewish material) and even its own christian doctrine that Hitler viewed was superior or what he believed was intended of Christianity all along. So you could argue that Hitler was more of a Christian cultist. Sort of in the vein of Mormons or Jehovah's witnesses (no I'm not saying he was either of those, but follows the cultish branch of Christianity as they do) . In other words, me being a Christian, and serving God and my faith the way that I do as a "born-again" believer would have been an intolerable sight and a sign of weakness in terms of Hitler's Positive Christianity.

There are other arguments refuted as well in terms of Hitler, his beliefs, the state of the church, and so forth, but I encourage you to read for yourself since I don't want to ruin it. This is a great book and well worth your time whether you are an atheist, or a theist. Hopefully, this will open the eyes of atheists and make Christians come up with something better than "Hitler was a closet atheist" when dealing with online atheist. Because that's a rumor even I don't believe.
Well done... gives you something to compare to in today's politics....
